Goal-shy Coventry host a Newcastle side getting players back
Coventry City host Newcastle United on Monday Night Football on 12 October 2026, closing Premier League matchday six. Frank Lampard’s promoted side have three points from five games and are still waiting for their first home goal of the season, while Matthias Jaissle’s Newcastle have eight points and are slowly emerging from an injury crisis. Kick-off at the Coventry Building Society Arena is at 20:00 UK time (21:00 CEST), with John Brooks the referee.
“We are hopeful there will be three or four back from the nine missing against Hull City.” – Newcastle manager Matthias Jaissle
Predicted lineups: Coventry vs Newcastle
Coventry are short up front. Taiwo Awoniyi serves the last game of his three-match ban for violent conduct against Brighton, and Haji Wright has not played this season because of a quad injury and is not due back until November. Amenda and Eccles (both calf injuries) and Woolfenden (knee) are also out. Milan van Ewijk is back in training after a hamstring problem, which gives Lampard a choice at right wing-back. Newcastle remain without goalkeeper Jaouen, Anthony Elanga and William Osula, but Joelinton, Dan Burn, Jacob Ramsey and Dedic are back in training. Jaissle has said the returning players are candidates for the squad rather than the starting XI, and he wants to manage Joelinton’s workload carefully.
Coventry Team News & Preview
Coventry’s return to the top flight has been a struggle in front of goal. They lost 3-0 at Arsenal, 1-0 at home to Hull, 1-0 at Manchester City and 5-0 at home to Brighton before winning 1-0 at Nottingham Forest just before the break. That win was the club’s first in the Premier League for 25 years, but it needs context: Forest had 63 per cent of the ball and 24 shots to Coventry’s ten, had a late equaliser ruled out by VAR and saw another effort cleared off the line by Bobby Thomas.
The home numbers are the real concern. Two games at the Coventry Building Society Arena have produced no goals and no points, and the only league goal of the season came from Dasilva at the City Ground. With Awoniyi suspended and Wright injured, the job up front falls again to Thomas-Asante, and Lampard’s side have one of the lowest shots-on-target counts in the division.
What works for or against Coventry
- One league goal in five games, and none at home.
- Awoniyi is suspended and Haji Wright is out until November.
- They won 1-0 at Nottingham Forest in their last league game.
- Forest outshot them 24-10 in that win.
- Milan van Ewijk is back in training after a hamstring injury.
Newcastle Team News & Preview
Jaissle was appointed in August after Eddie Howe’s departure, and his first weeks have been dominated by injuries. Nine players missed the 2-1 win over Hull before the break, a game in which Willock and Lewis Hall scored early, Wissa had a stoppage-time penalty saved and Hull finished the stronger side. The break has helped: Joelinton, Burn, Ramsey and Dedic are back in training, and Nico González has cleared concussion protocol.
Newcastle’s results have been mixed. They drew 2-2 at home with Liverpool and Bournemouth, won 2-0 at Tottenham and lost 4-1 at Leeds, so the away form covers both ends of the scale. Defensively they are not watertight, with only one league clean sheet, but Hall has been their outstanding player and their attack has scored in all five league games. Against a side that has not scored at home, that matters.
What works for or against Newcastle
- They have scored in all five league games this season.
- Joelinton, Burn, Ramsey and Dedic are back in training.
- Only one league clean sheet so far.
- Lost 4-1 at Leeds on their last league trip before Hull.
- Jaissle is still only six league games into the job.

Coventry vs. Newcastle Form Guide
Coventry Form, Stats & Data
Coventry average 0.20 goals per game, and it says a lot that their highest-rated player is a centre-back. Thomas has been busy because Coventry spend long periods without the ball, as they did at Forest. They can stay in games by defending deep, but they have not yet shown they can create enough to trouble a Premier League defence at home.
Newcastle Form, Stats & Data
Newcastle score and concede 1.80 goals per game, which reflects a side that has been open at both ends during an injury-hit start. Elanga’s absence costs them one of their two top scorers, but Willock and Hall both scored against Hull, and Hall’s form from left-back gives them a reliable source of attacking threat.
Coventry vs Newcastle: Prediction & Betting Tip
The case for Newcastle rests on Coventry’s attack more than on Newcastle’s own form. Lampard’s side have scored once in five games, have not scored at home and are without their two main strikers in Awoniyi and Wright. Newcastle, meanwhile, have scored in every league game and are getting important players back after the break. I make the visitors the more likely winners, and Draw No Bet protects me if Coventry grind out a stalemate.
The one thing that gives me pause is Newcastle’s inconsistency. They have kept only one clean sheet, lost heavily at Leeds and let Hull back into the game at St James‘ Park, and Coventry showed at Forest that they can win a game while being outplayed. Jaissle has also said his returning players are not ready to start. But a side that has not scored at home all season needs to find a goal against a team that scores regularly, and I do not see Coventry doing enough of that.
I will be backing Newcastle Draw No Bet at 1.59 with Winz. If I had to name a score, it would be 0-1.
