In-form Villa host a Viking side caught up in a title race
Unai Emery’s side have six points from two games after a 3-2 win at Club Brugge and a 6-0 thrashing of Fenerbahçe, and they won 1-0 at Newcastle on Saturday. Viking have one point from their first two games, but that draw was a 3-3 with Bayern Munich, and the Norwegian champions are level on points with Bodø/Glimt at the top of the Eliteserien. The game is at Villa Park on Wednesday, 21 October 2026, in the Champions League league phase, with kick-off at 21:00 CEST. Sebastian Gishamer has the whistle.
“The message is respect. Respect the competition, respect Europe and the difficulty of getting to the position we are now.” – Aston Villa manager Unai Emery
Predicted lineups: Aston Villa vs Viking
Villa have a problem at left-back. Aaron Wan-Bissaka, who played there at Newcastle, went off with a hamstring injury, Matteo Ruggeri is out with a hamstring problem and Ian Maatsen only returned to training on Tuesday, so Tyrone Mings is the likely emergency option. Johan Manzambi, the match-winner at St James‘ Park, misses out with what Emery called a small injury, and Amadou Onana remains out. Viking are without Martin Ove Roseth, Anders Bærtelsen and Nicholas D’Agostino, while Veton Berisha is a doubt.
Aston Villa Team News & Preview
Villa were worthy winners at Newcastle. Manzambi headed in Joao Gomes‘ cross after 36 minutes, Nicolas Jackson missed a clear chance and Emiliano Buendía hit the post before the break, and Newcastle only tested Zion Suzuki once. It was Emery’s 100th Premier League win.
In Europe, Villa have been outstanding. They have nine goals in two league-phase games, average ten shots on target per match, and Jackson has three goals in the competition. At Villa Park they have won 11 in a row and are unbeaten in 14 home games in Europe. The only concern is the workload: this is part of a run of nine games in 29 days, with Manchester City up next on Saturday.
What works for or against Aston Villa
- Six points and nine goals from two Champions League games.
- 11 straight wins at Villa Park and 14 unbeaten home games in Europe.
- No natural left-back available, and Manzambi misses out.
- Manchester City visit on Saturday, so some rotation is possible.
Viking Team News & Preview
Viking have shown they can hurt anyone. They led Bayern 2-0 at half-time in Stavanger before drawing 3-3, and they scored at Stuttgart too, losing 3-1. On Saturday they came from 2-1 down at half-time to beat Fredrikstad 3-2, with Peter Christiansen scoring twice in two minutes after the break.
The problem is what happens without the ball. Viking have averaged only 36% possession in the Champions League and have allowed 5.5 xG in two games, conceding three goals each time. Their minds may also be partly on the title race: they are level on 56 points with Bodø/Glimt, with the trip to Bodø on 30 October looking like a title decider.
What works for or against Viking
- Scored in both Champions League games, including three against Bayern.
- Won 3-2 against Fredrikstad on Saturday after trailing at half-time.
- Six goals conceded in two Champions League games.
- Only 36% possession on average in this competition.

Aston Villa vs. Viking Form Guide
Aston Villa Form, Stats & Data
Villa’s Champions League numbers are remarkable: 3.15 xG and ten shots on target per game while averaging only 40% of the ball. Emery’s side are lethal in transition and do not need to dominate possession to create big chances, which is exactly the type of game Viking tend to produce.
Viking Form, Stats & Data
Viking have scored four goals from only 1.4 xG in the competition, so their finishing has been far more efficient than their chance creation. At the other end, 2.75 xG against per game shows how often they have been opened up, and both Stuttgart and Bayern scored three against them.
Aston Villa vs Viking: Prediction & Betting Tip
I expect Villa to win comfortably. They have been brilliant in this competition, they are unbeaten in 14 home games in Europe, and Viking have conceded three goals in both of their Champions League matches. Villa’s speed on the break against a side that has allowed 2.75 xG per game should produce plenty of chances, and I think a two-goal margin is well within reach.
The one thing that gives me pause is Villa’s squad. They have no fit natural left-back, Manzambi is out and City are next, so Emery may make changes. Viking have also scored in both Champions League games and gave Bayern serious problems. That is why I am not going bigger on the stake, but Villa’s quality at home should still tell.
I will be backing Aston Villa -1.5 Asian Handicap at 1.61 with Winz. If I had to name a score, it would be 3-1.
