In Cairo he has spent the build-up appealing to Al Ahly and Zamalek supporters to turn the neutral venue into a home crowd, which tells you how seriously he takes the fixture. South Africa are 54th in the world, chasing a third straight AFCON qualification, and should dominate the ball as Kenya did. Whether they turn that into more than a couple of goals against a side that sits this deep is the question I keep coming back to.

Eritrea’s numbers from Nairobi are the whole argument in one line: ten shots, six on target, no big chances, one goal from a defensive mistake, and 29 shots faced. That is a side that concedes territory by design and relies on Sultan, on blocks in the box and on Sulieman running into space. Against Kenya it worked for 87 minutes; against a South Africa side with more quality in the final third it may not hold for 90, but it also makes a high-scoring game unlikely. Eritrea have scored in all three games under Yakan, which is why I would not go near the win-to-nil or team-goals markets, and have not conceded more than one in any of those games, which is why I would not go near the high totals either.
South Africa Form, Stats & Data
South Africa are the far better team and should have the ball for most of the evening, as Kenya did. The evidence from Orlando, though, is of a side that creates chances and wastes them – Mofokeng’s early miss, Maseko’s profligacy, Mosimane’s own two-out-of-six line – and that can be hit down the flanks when the full-backs push high. With Modiba gone and Kabini or Basadien coming in cold, that flank is even more exposed to Sulieman on the break. I expect Bafana to win, probably by more than one, but the picture of a wasteful favourite against a deep block is not one that produces four goals often, which is why I prefer the total to the handicap as the main bet.

South Africa to win at 1.19 is not a bet I want to make, so the question for me is what kind of game this becomes. Everything about Eritrea points to a low-scoring one: a deep 4-2-3-1 that gave Kenya 29 shots but only one goal, no game above three goals under Yakan, and a counter-attack that scores once and then defends the lead. South Africa are better than Kenya, but they are also, by their manager’s own admission, wasteful, and they have lost their first-choice left-back on top of three other absentees. A 2-0 or 2-1 win for Bafana is the outcome I see most often.
The strongest argument against is the gap in class. The 54th-ranked side against the 184th, with Rayners, Appollis and Mofokeng in the front line and a full 30-man squad to rotate, can run away with it if Eritrea’s block tires the way it did in the last ten minutes in Nairobi – a 3-1 or 4-0 would not shock anyone. That is why the stake is modest rather than strong.
