Hulk-inspired Fluminense return to the Maracanã against a bruised Coritiba
Fluminense host Coritiba at the Maracanã in the late game of Brasileirão matchday 29, with kick-off at 21:30 local time on Thursday, 8 October (02:30 CEST on Friday, 9 October). Both sides come out of a near three-week international break, but from very different places: Marcão’s side won 3-1 at Corinthians last time out to sit level on 48 points with fourth-placed Cruzeiro, while Coritiba were thrashed 5-0 at Vasco and arrive ninth on 38 points. It is also Fluminense’s first game at the Maracanã since 8 September and the first match on the stadium’s newly relaid pitch. Rodrigo José Pereira de Lima is the referee.
Fluminense have lost only one of their 14 home league games this season.
Predicted lineups: Fluminense vs Coritiba
Marcão has to rebuild part of the side that won in São Paulo. Agustín Canobbio and Nonato both picked up a third yellow card at Corinthians and are suspended, so Hércules and Kevin Serna are expected to come in. Left-back Renê has been rested with an ankle problem, which hands Guilherme Arana a rare start under Marcão, and leading league scorer John Kennedy remains unavailable. Local reports split on whether Guga or Samuel Xavier starts at right-back. Coritiba have their own problems: centre-back Tiago Cóser has been ruled out with a muscle issue, with veteran Maicon or Rodrigo Moledo set to partner Jacy, while Fluminense loanees Joaquín Lavega and Keno cannot play against their parent club. Breno Lopes returns from suspension, and Pedro Morisco is pushing to start in goal despite only one training session since returning from Brazil duty.
Fluminense Team News & Preview
Hulk is the story at Fluminense. The 40-year-old scored twice in the 3-1 win at Corinthians, where Marcão’s side sat off a home team with more of the ball and punished them in transition, and he has six goals and three assists in eight starts since Marcão took over. The win took Fluminense back into the top four and extended a strong second half of the season, including a run to the Libertadores semi-finals.
The home record is the bigger argument: ten wins, three draws and one defeat in 14 games, with 24 goals scored. Fluminense also average 58% possession, the highest figure in the league, and lead the division with 5.6 shots on target per game. The caveats are real, though. Renê is their highest-rated player on FotMob this season (7.37), Canobbio has eight goal contributions, and John Kennedy is the club’s top league scorer with nine. With the Fla-Flu derby on Sunday and a Libertadores semi-final ahead, Marcão could also manage minutes in the second half if the game is under control.
What works for or against Fluminense
- Ten wins from 14 home league games, with only one home defeat all season.
- Hulk has six goals and three assists in eight starts under Marcão.
- Renê, Canobbio, Nonato and John Kennedy are all missing, removing four regular contributors.
- The Fla-Flu derby follows on Sunday, so in-game rotation is possible.
Coritiba Team News & Preview
Fernando Seabra took responsibility for the 5-0 defeat at São Januário, calling it an atypical night for a team that had built its season on competitiveness. He pointed to absences at the time, with Vitor Tissi improvised at right-back because new signing Fabricio Bustos was not yet fit for 90 minutes. Bustos is now expected to start, and Coritiba have had 19 days to regroup.
Before that defeat, Coritiba were one of the better travelling sides in the league, which is why I would not treat the Vasco result as the whole picture. The season-long numbers are still a concern. Seabra’s side average only 1.05 xG and 3.5 shots on target per game, and their average possession of 40.2% is the lowest in the division. Josué is the key creative outlet with 11 assists, but without Lavega, who has seven goal contributions, the supply line to Pedro Rocha and Breno Lopes (eight league goals each) looks thinner. The defence is also being reshuffled again after Cóser’s injury, with a 38-year-old likely to step in.
What works for or against Coritiba
- Beaten 5-0 at Vasco last time out and winless in three league games.
- Only 1.05 xG and 3.5 shots on target per game, with the league's lowest average possession.
- Josué has 11 assists and gives the side a genuine creative reference point.
- Lavega and Keno are ineligible, and Tiago Cóser is a fresh absentee in central defence.

Fluminense vs. Coritiba Form Guide
Fluminense Form, Stats & Data
Fluminense control games more than almost anyone in the league and turn that into volume: 70 big chances created is among the highest totals in the division. The weakness has been at the other end, where 36 goals conceded is more than their xGA of 1.20 per game suggests. That matters less against an opponent producing so little, but it is the main reason I prefer a handicap line to anything involving a clean sheet. Renê’s absence is relevant beyond the rating: he has been the preferred left-back under Marcão, and Arana has had only one start in that spell.
Coritiba Form, Stats & Data
Coritiba have outperformed their numbers to sit ninth. They have scored 37 goals from roughly 29.5 xG, and both measures of chance creation rank near the bottom of the league, while 1.63 xGA per game is among the worst defensive profiles in the division. Away from home they have taken 19 points from 14 games, scoring 18 and conceding 24. With a squad worth well under half of Fluminense’s and two loan wingers unavailable, I expect them to spend long spells without the ball.
Head-to-Head
The reverse fixture in April finished 1-1 in Curitiba, but Fluminense were managed by Luis Zubeldía at the time, so I treat it as background rather than a betting argument.

Fluminense vs Coritiba: Prediction & Betting Tip
For me, the gap between these sides at the Maracanã is wide enough to look beyond the 1.43 on a straight home win. Fluminense have the league’s best shot-on-target output, a home record of one defeat in 14 and a striker in Hulk who has carried the attack under Marcão. Coritiba create less than almost anyone, keep the ball less than anyone, and arrive with a fresh hole in central defence and without two of their wide options.
The strongest argument against the bet is the Fluminense team sheet. Losing Renê, Canobbio, Nonato and John Kennedy at once takes a lot of quality out of the side, and with Flamengo on Sunday, Marcão has every reason to protect Hulk and Thiago Silva once the game is won. A narrow 1-0 or 2-1 is very possible, which is exactly why I prefer the -1 line: a one-goal win returns the stake, while a two-goal win pays.
I will be backing Fluminense -1 Asian Handicap at 1.72 with Winz. If I had to name a score, it would be 2-0.
