KuPS can go top alone against goal-shy Oulu
KuPS welcome AC Oulu to Väre Areena on Thursday, 8 October 2026, with kick-off at 18:00 CEST (19:00 local time). It is the first league game in Kuopio for almost three weeks after the international break, and the context has shifted overnight: FC Inter drew 0-0 at Gnistan on Wednesday, so Miika Nuutinen’s side can move two points clear at the top of the Veikkausliiga with a win. Oulu arrive sixth and still without a point in the championship round, each of their three defeats decided by a single goal. Joona Kontinen has the whistle.
KuPS are level on 48 points with FC Inter but have a game in hand, while Oulu have scored once in three championship-round fixtures.
Predicted lineups: KuPS vs Oulu
Both line-ups below are projections based on the last competitive starting XIs before the break. Nuutinen named the same 4-2-3-1 shape in all three championship-round games, with Valentín Gasc and Petteri Pennanen at the base of midfield and top scorer Jaime Moreno leading the line. Moreno scored for Nicaragua during the international window, so travel is the only question mark around him. Oulu are expected to stick with the 4-2-3-1 Mikko Isokangas used against FC Inter, with Rasmus Karjalainen operating behind Roope Riski.
KuPS Team News & Preview
The title race is only part of the picture for KuPS. Thursday opens a run of games every three or four days: FC Inter away on Sunday, then the start of the Conference League league phase against Trabzonspor. Nuutinen used the break to work on chance creation, telling Savon Sanomat that his side want to create more openings and score more goals. He also warned that Oulu are well organised and that KuPS will need patience for the full 90 minutes.
That caution fits the recent evidence. KuPS have not been free-scoring in the championship round: a 1-1 at Gnistan, a 0-0 at home to HJK and a 2-0 win in Vaasa, where VPS had 15 shots but only one on target. The defence has been the stronger unit, with Kreidl, Magassa and Lötjönen behind back-to-back clean sheets. Defender Taneli Hämäläinen said the squad want another shut-out on Thursday. At home over the whole season the picture is more open, though: KuPS have conceded 14 goals in 12 league games at Väre Areena and drawn five of them.
What works for or against KuPS
- KuPS are the league's highest-rated side on FotMob (7.00) and average 5.2 shots on target per game, the best figure in the Veikkausliiga.
- Back-to-back clean sheets against HJK and VPS before the break.
- Only six wins from 12 home league games, with five draws at Väre Areena.
- A trip to title rivals FC Inter follows on Sunday, so the workload is about to rise sharply.
Oulu Team News & Preview
Oulu’s problem is at the other end of the pitch. They lost 1-0 at VPS, 2-1 at home to Gnistan and 1-0 at home to FC Inter, and the Inter game was the clearest warning sign: six shots, one on target and no big chances created. Midfielder Julius Paananen admitted before the trip that the team have not scored enough in recent games and named better finishing, winning duels and keeping a clean sheet as the keys in Kuopio.
The structure without the ball is the reason Oulu are still competitive. They have kept nine league clean sheets, joint second-best in the division, and Miguel Santos has been one of their most reliable performers. Isokangas signed a new contract during the break, so there is stability in the dugout. The squad also kept their rhythm with a 1-0 friendly win over FF Jaro, Camilo Triana scoring.
What works for or against Oulu
- Only one goal in three championship-round games and just 40 big chances all season, the second-lowest total in the league.
- Nine league clean sheets show how hard Oulu can be to break down.
- Rasmus Karjalainen has ten league goals and gives them a genuine outlet.
- All three championship-round games have been lost, with no points from the last three outings.

KuPS vs. Oulu Form Guide
KuPS Form, Stats & Data
KuPS have the best attack-and-defence combination in the division on paper: 41 goals scored, only 24 conceded, the most shots on target per game and the highest team rating. Moreno carries the scoring load with ten goals, while Pennanen’s four assists make him the main creator from deep. Bob Nii Armah is still the squad’s highest-rated player by FotMob, but he has not started any of the three championship-round games, which partly explains why the attack has looked less fluent since the split. Possession is rarely the issue for KuPS; turning 58% of the ball into clear chances against a deep block is.
Oulu Form, Stats & Data
Oulu have the weakest attacking numbers of the six championship-round sides: 1.04 goals per game, 3.7 shots on target and only 40 big chances. With ten goals and three assists, Karjalainen has had a direct hand in half of their league goals, so the plan revolves around getting him on the ball between the lines. The defensive side holds up better. Juha Pirinen and Santos sit right behind Karjalainen in Oulu’s FotMob ratings, and nine clean sheets suggest this is a team built to keep games tight rather than to trade chances.
KuPS vs Oulu: Prediction & Betting Tip
For me, the most reliable angle is the shape of the game rather than the winner. Oulu have created very little in the championship round and are unlikely to open up in Kuopio, while KuPS have been patient rather than ruthless since the split, keeping clean sheets in their last two league games. Nuutinen’s own words point the same way: he expects to grind against an organised side for 90 minutes. Add the rust of a 19-day break and five of the six championship-round games involving these teams staying under 2.5 goals, and I expect a controlled, low-scoring night.
The biggest risk is KuPS‘ home record over the full season. They have scored three or more goals in four home league games, including a 3-2 win over Oulu in April, and the defence has been less watertight at Väre Areena than away from home. If KuPS score early and Oulu are forced to chase, the total can go quickly. I still believe the current form of both attacks outweighs that, and Oulu’s chance creation is the key reason.
My main bet is Under 2.5 Goals at 1.90 with Winz. My correct-score pick is 1-0 to KuPS.
