The tightest defence in League Two meets the division’s unbeaten side
Matt Taylor’s side are 16th, two points off the play-offs, with the strangest goal record in the division: six scored and six conceded in 11 games. Crewe arrive third and still unbeaten after 11 league games, a club-record start to a season, and Lee Bell’s side have won three in a row. The game is at St James Park on Tuesday, 20 October 2026, with a 7.45pm UK kick-off on League Two matchday 12. Harry Wager will referee.
“We know we can play better than we did, especially with the ball in an attacking sense.” – Exeter manager Matt Taylor after the 0-0 draw at Colchester
Predicted lineups: Exeter vs Crewe
Neither club has reported fresh injury problems ahead of the midweek round, so I expect both managers to stick largely with the sides that started on Saturday. Exeter kept another clean sheet at Colchester with Jack Bycroft in goal and Luca Woodhouse, their best-rated player on FotMob, at the heart of the back four. Crewe are likely to keep faith with the side that beat Rochdale, with Jordan Gibson and Matúš Holíček supporting Josh March.
Exeter City Team News & Preview
Exeter are built from the back. They have conceded three goals in their last eight league games and kept six clean sheets in 11, and the 0-0 at Colchester was typical: Bycroft made the important save, Jack Tucker hit the underside of the bar for the hosts and Exeter offered little going the other way apart from an early Josh Gordon shot. Taylor admitted afterwards that his side were physically tested and must be better with the ball.
The problem is at the other end. Exeter have failed to score in six of their 11 league games, only one side in League Two has scored fewer, and their top scorer is centre-back Jack Fitzwater with two. At St James Park they are unbeaten (W2 D3) but have scored just four times in five games and conceded once. Ten of their 11 league fixtures have finished under 2.5 goals, the only exception being a 2-1 defeat at York.
What works for or against Exeter City
- Six goals conceded in 11 games and six clean sheets, including only one goal conceded at home.
- Unbeaten at St James Park this season (W2 D3).
- Only six league goals scored and six blanks in 11 games.
- Ten of Exeter's 11 league games have finished under 2.5 goals.
Crewe Alexandra Team News & Preview
Crewe’s unbeaten run started with plenty of draws, but the attack has clicked over the last fortnight. They beat Bristol Rovers 3-1, won 1-0 at Swindon and edged a 3-2 win over Rochdale on Saturday, where Holíček opened the scoring and Gibson struck twice either side of half-time before a Joel Tabiner own goal and a late Aden Flint header made it nervy. Gibson now has five league goals.
Away from home, Bell’s side look very different. They are unbeaten on the road (W2 D3) but have scored only three times and conceded twice in those five matches: 1-0 at Crawley, 0-0 at Port Vale, 1-1 at Colchester, 1-1 at Rotherham and 1-0 at Swindon. Every one of those games stayed under 2.5 goals.
What works for or against Crewe Alexandra
- Unbeaten in 11 league games and three straight wins.
- Only two goals conceded in five away league games.
- Just three goals scored on the road all season.
- Jordan Gibson has five league goals, two of them against Rochdale.

Exeter vs. Crewe Alexandra Form Guide
Exeter Form, Stats & Data
Exeter’s underlying numbers are more balanced than their scoreline suggests: 1.11 xG per game going forward and 1.14 against. They have been unlucky not to score more, but they have also been fortunate to concede so little. Either way, a side averaging 3.1 shots on target per match is not one that blows opponents away, and both their xG figures point to tight, low-event games.
Crewe Alexandra Form, Stats & Data
Crewe have been efficient rather than dominant. They produce 1.19 xG per game and allow 1.24, so the gap between their position and their underlying numbers comes from good finishing and a defence that has conceded fewer than expected. Bell’s side are happy without the ball, and away from home that has meant cagey, low-scoring games.
Exeter vs Crewe: Prediction & Betting Tip
I find it hard to split these two, but I am confident about the type of game we are going to get. Exeter’s matches have averaged barely more than one goal, ten of their 11 have stayed under 2.5 goals, and at home they have conceded only once. Crewe’s five away games have produced six goals combined and none has gone over 2.5. Both sides sit below 50% possession on average and both are comfortable defending deep, which points to a game decided by one goal, or none.
My main concern is Crewe’s recent attacking form: seven goals in their last three league games, and both teams have scored in seven of their 11 league matches. If Gibson finds space early, Exeter would have to come out of their shell. But Crewe’s goals have come at Gresty Road, while on the road they have been far more cautious, and Exeter’s defence has not conceded more than twice in any league game this season.
Under 2.5 Goals at 1.60 with Winz is the bet. Correct score: 1-1.
