Goal-shy Port Vale take their 1-0 habit on the road
Gareth Ainsworth’s side are sixth on 16 points but come into it off a 3-1 defeat at Accrington that left their manager unimpressed. Jon Brady’s Port Vale are 21st, yet they have won three in a row in all competitions, every one of them without conceding, and two of those finished 1-0. Gillingham and Port Vale meet at Priestfield on Tuesday, 20 October 2026, in an 8pm UK kick-off on League Two matchday 12, live on Sky Sports+. Jamie O’Connor takes charge.
“We looked a little bit weaker than them, and we can’t look like that.” – Gillingham manager Gareth Ainsworth after the 3-1 defeat at Accrington
Predicted lineups: Gillingham vs Port Vale
Ainsworth said places are up for grabs after Saturday, so changes are possible, but no fresh injuries have been reported and the graphic below shows the side that started at Accrington. Port Vale have named an unchanged XI for three straight games and I expect Brady to stick with it, with Max Watters and Onel Hernández up front in a 3-5-2. Ryan Croasdale remains out with a foot injury.
Gillingham Team News & Preview
Gillingham were second-best at Accrington. Omar Beckles scored their goal, but Ainsworth called the goals conceded terrible, singled out the marking at two corners and described the first as a bit of a calamity. He still backed his players after what he called an off day, and the bigger picture is decent: four wins, four draws and three defeats, with four clean sheets.
The goals in Gillingham’s season have mostly come away from home, where they scored four at both Rochdale and Rotherham. At Priestfield the pattern is tighter. They have won two, drawn two and lost one, scoring six and conceding four, and three of those five home games stayed under 2.5 goals. Ronan Hale is top scorer with four and James Brophy is their best-rated player on FotMob (7.50), but they have won fewer corners than any other side in League Two.
What works for or against Gillingham
- Gillingham won the last two league meetings with Port Vale, both 1-0.
- Four clean sheets this season, three of them at home.
- Three goals conceded at Accrington, with poor marking at set pieces.
- Six goals scored in five home league games.
Port Vale Team News & Preview
Port Vale are a side of two halves. At Vale Park they have won three straight league games without conceding, most recently 1-0 against Chesterfield on Saturday, when Hernández scored just before the break after Watters headed the ball down to him. Brady said he was happy to win ugly. Away from home, they have lost all four league games and scored only once, in a 3-1 defeat at Swindon.
What links both sides of that record is a lack of goals. Vale have scored five times in nine league games, the fewest in League Two, and their nine fixtures have produced 14 goals in total. Only one of them, that game at Swindon, went over 2.5 goals. Brady’s side defend well enough, conceding nine, and three of their four league clean sheets have come in their last three home games.
What works for or against Port Vale
- Three straight wins in all competitions, all clean sheets.
- Unchanged XI for three consecutive games.
- Lost all four away league games and scored once on the road.
- Only five league goals scored in nine games.

Gillingham vs. Port Vale Form Guide
Gillingham Form, Stats & Data
Gillingham’s results are ahead of their underlying numbers. They score 1.45 goals per game from 1.16 xG and concede 1.18 from 1.42 xG against, which suggests some good fortune at both ends. With 3.3 shots on target per game and few corners, they are not a side that piles pressure on opponents for long spells.
Port Vale Form, Stats & Data
Port Vale’s xG numbers are far better than their league position. They create 1.22 xG per game and allow only 0.93, so poor finishing rather than poor play explains why they are in the bottom four. Even so, 0.56 goals per game is a remarkably low return, and their defence is the part of the side that keeps them in games.
Gillingham vs Port Vale: Prediction & Betting Tip
I cannot back either side with confidence. Port Vale’s underlying numbers are good but they have not won away, and Gillingham are coming off a poor performance with possible changes. What I do trust is the goal pattern. Port Vale have scored five league goals all season, eight of their nine games have finished under 2.5 goals, and they have kept clean sheets in four of their nine. Gillingham’s home games have been tighter than their away games, and both of the last two league meetings between these clubs finished 1-0.
What worries me is Gillingham’s attack on their day: they scored four at both Rochdale and Rotherham, and six of their 11 league games have gone over 2.5 goals. If Vale’s away frailty shows again, the hosts could run up a score. But Vale have conceded more than two in only one league game, and their own lack of goals makes a high-scoring game unlikely.
I am backing Under 2.5 Goals at 1.63 with Winz, and I have it finishing 1-0.
