Essen’s stretched squad gets a home game against a Jahn side that score but rarely win away
Rot-Weiss Essen have not lost at the Hafenstraße this season: four wins and a draw, with 11 goals scored and only three conceded. That record is what keeps them favourites on Friday, even though Uwe Koschinat is running out of bodies. Franci Bouebari is suspended after his fifth booking, Marvin Obuz has injured his ankle, and Saturday’s 1-0 defeat at Ingolstadt ended a run of 12 competitive games without a loss. Jahn Regensburg are unbeaten in four, but they are still 18th.
Rot-Weiss Essen took four points from their three games last week and are still third in the 3. Liga, despite five players being unavailable for Friday.
Predicted lineups: Essen vs Regensburg
Alongside Bouebari and Obuz, Essen are without Geschwill (knee), Dardari (thigh) and Menzel, who is still rehabilitating a syndesmosis injury. The kicker expects Kostka to move to left-back and Hofmann to start on the right. Jahn are missing Asante, Dietz, Saller, Strauss and Ziegele, but Sascha Hildmann can again pick the side that drew 0-0 with Wehen Wiesbaden; Oscar Schönfelder is one booking away from a ban.
Essen Team News & Preview
The defeat in Ingolstadt was harsh on Essen. They had the better of the first half, with Pesch heading the first chance and Janssen, Abiama and Hofmann all going close, before Jakob Golz let Jonas Scholz’s header from a corner slip through his hands just after the break. It was the only phase of the game Ingolstadt clearly controlled.
The bigger issue is fatigue. Essen played three games in a week and are short of options, especially on the flanks, where Obuz’s injury forces another reshuffle. Semir Telalović remains the key man: he has six league goals and is the team’s best-rated player. At home, Koschinat’s side have won 1-0 against Havelse and Viktoria Köln, 6-2 against Würzburg and 2-0 against Fortuna Köln.
What works for or against Essen
- Unbeaten at home in the league: four wins and a draw.
- Telalović has six league goals.
- Bouebari is suspended and Obuz has a new ankle injury.
- Only four points from a demanding week of three games.
Regensburg Team News & Preview
Jahn have steadied after a poor start. They thrashed Havelse 5-0, drew 2-2 at Verl and then shared a goalless game with Wehen Wiesbaden, where they had chances early on but faded. Lucas Hermes, with six goals, and Nassim Boujellab, with five, have given them a real threat going forward.
On the road, though, Jahn have won only once in five, 5-2 at Viktoria Köln on the opening day. Since then they have lost 5-1 at Hoffenheim II and drawn at Aachen, Stuttgart II and Verl. They have scored in every away game, but they have also conceded 14 goals in those five matches.
What works for or against Regensburg
- Unbeaten in four league games.
- Hermes and Boujellab have 11 league goals between them.
- One away win in five, with 14 goals conceded on the road.
- Still 18th in the table.

RW Essen vs. Regensburg Form Guide
RW Essen Form, Stats & Data
Essen are a little more dominant than their opponents on average, with 53% possession and almost six shots on target per game. Their home defence has been the foundation, with three goals conceded in five games.
Regensburg Form, Stats & Data
Jahn score two goals a game, which is unusual for a side near the bottom, but they concede almost as many. Captain Adrian Fein has been their most consistent performer in midfield.
Essen vs Regensburg: Prediction & Betting Tip
I am backing Essen. Their home record is the best part of their season, and Jahn’s away form shows a team that can score but struggles to defend for 90 minutes. Telalović is in good form, and Essen created enough at Ingolstadt to suggest the defeat was more about one mistake than a dip in level.
The main risk is Essen’s thin squad. With Bouebari and Obuz out and several players coming off three games in a week, they may fade late, and Jahn have the attacking players to punish that. That is why the stake is moderate. Still, a home side unbeaten at the Hafenstraße against a visitor with one away win is the side I want to be with.
The bet is Rot-Weiss Essen to win at 1.58 with Winz; 2-1 is my score.
