Angola, under Aliou Cissé, meet a Malawi side that leads the group but arrived to an empty airport

Angola host Malawi at the Estádio 11 de Novembro in Luanda on Tuesday, 6 October 2026, on matchday two of Group B in qualifying for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, with kick-off at 20:00 local time (21:00 CEST). The group has already moved on: Egypt beat South Sudan 5-0 in Juba on 29 September and top the table on four points from two games, Malawi are second on three after beating South Sudan 2-1 in Lilongwe, Angola have one point from their 0-0 in Cairo, and South Sudan have none. With Egypt the clear favourite to win the group, this is effectively the first direct meeting in the race for second place and the best-runner-up spots. Angola are in the early days of Aliou Cissé’s reign – the former Senegal manager was appointed in April on a contract to 2030, and Cairo was his first competitive match – while Kalisto Pasuwa has been in charge of Malawi since February 2025 and has said in public that his job depends on qualification.

„Nous avons fait un grand match contre une grande équipe. Je suis content de ce point, et content de la façon dont notre ligne défensive s’est comportée“ – Aliou Cissé after the 0-0 in Cairo: a great match against a great team, happy with the point and with how the defensive line behaved.

Predicted lineups: Angola vs Malawi

Neither manager has given a pre-match press conference that has reached the Angolan or Malawian press, so both elevens below are projections. Angola’s follows the 5-4-1 that held Egypt in Cairo, with two adjustments: Depú (Petro de Luanda), who missed Cairo with a physical problem, and Zini Salvador (AEK Athens), who was suspended there, are both available again according to Rádio Nacional de Angola, and Zito Luvumbo, who went off hurt on 70 minutes against Egypt, is listed as a doubt by the English previews even though the team doctor said on 28 September that he was recovering well – Chico Banza, who replaced him in Cairo, takes his place here. Beni Mukendi was injured in training in Casablanca and sent back to Vitória Guimarães; Sandro Cruz and Randy Nteka had already gone home. Malawi’s 24-man travelling party does not include Chifundo Mphasi or Wisdom Mpinganjira, who both featured against South Sudan, for reasons no outlet has explained; Richard Mbulu returns from a groin problem, and Francisco Madinga, booked against South Sudan, is one yellow card from a ban.

Angola Team News & Preview

The point in Cairo was earned the hard way. Egypt had 66 per cent of the ball, 15 shots to ten and 27 touches in the Angolan box to 14, but only two efforts on target, and a Ziko goal was ruled out for offside on 21 minutes. Cissé set up in a 5-4-1 with Carmo, Buatu and Gaspar across the middle of the back five, Show and Keliano screening, and Mabululu alone up front; the Angolan press praised the „coesão defensiva, rigor táctico e carácter“ and Cissé said the plan had been executed. It was a defensive point rather than a performance with the ball and it continued a pattern: Cissé’s three matches have produced 1-1, 3-0 and 0-0, and the only goals came in a June friendly against the Central African Republic when Mabululu scored a hat-trick in 35 minutes.

The question for Luanda is what Angola look like when they have to make the game. The returns of Depú and Zini Salvador add attacking options the squad lacked in Cairo, Luvumbo’s pace on the left is the doubt, and Mabululu is the one proven finisher. The home crowd will expect a win – Rádio Nacional’s framing on Saturday was that victory is „o único resultado no horizonte“ – and the record against Malawi encourages that: Angola have won four of the eight meetings, lost one, and kept clean sheets in the last three, including Nteka’s 1-0 at the 2025 COSAFA Cup. But a team that has scored twice in its last four competitive matches, none of them an open game, is not one I can expect to run up a score against a Malawi side that sat deep and defended a lead for most of the second half against South Sudan.

What works for or against Angola

  • Clean sheets against Egypt and the Central African Republic under Cissé, three clean sheets in a row against Malawi, and Depú and Zini Salvador back in the squad.
  • At home with eleven days' rest and no travel, while Malawi flew in on Sunday and were left waiting at the airport for two hours.
  • Two goals in the last four competitive games, 34 per cent possession and two shots on target in Cairo; Luvumbo is a doubt and Mukendi, Cruz and Nteka have gone home.
  • Only the second competitive match under a new manager who has so far set his team up to defend, not to chase a game.

Malawi Team News & Preview

Malawi’s 2-1 over South Sudan was a necessary win rather than a convincing one. Babatunde Adepoju scored his first international goal on 20 minutes from a rebound after McDonald Lameck’s cross, Mwaungulu hit the post, and then the Flames dropped off: Joseph Dhata equalised straight after half-time following a defensive mix-up, and the winner on 64 minutes came from a Lameck long throw headed in by Lloyd Njaliwa. Pasuwa’s own assessment was blunt – „we dropped the tempo after scoring, we gave them too much possession, and we were dropping, sitting in our defence“ – and he had said before the game that his team needed to be „offensive but careful because we can be caught on counterattacks“. It was Malawi’s first win since beating Lesotho 1-0 in a friendly last November, after a 2026 of 0-0, 0-1, 0-1 and 1-1 against Zambia, Botswana and Ethiopia.

The trip itself has been eventful. The squad flew from Lilongwe on Sunday, landed in Luanda at 16:30 and left the airport nearly two hours later after Angolan federation officials went to the wrong terminal; FAM vice-president Madalitso Kuyera said the matter would be investigated. The 24 who travelled do not include Mphasi, who started against South Sudan, or Mpinganjira, who came on; Mbulu is back, and Amos Sande, Robert Saizi and Chawanangwa Gumbo have been added late. The squad is largely drawn from the domestic league and the strengths are clear enough from Lilongwe: Lameck’s delivery, Njaliwa’s aerial threat from set-pieces and long throws, Adepoju’s movement. The weaknesses are equally clear – a tendency to retreat once ahead, and a record of failing to score in three of the five games this year.

What works for or against Malawi

  • Top of the group on three points, a set-piece threat through Lameck's deliveries and Njaliwa's headers, and Mbulu back as a target-man option.
  • Pasuwa has publicly tied his job to qualification, which has sharpened the squad's focus after five winless matches before the South Sudan game.
  • Failed to score in three of five games in 2026, no goal against Angola in the last three meetings, and the manager admits his side sat too deep after taking the lead.
  • Mphasi and Mpinganjira left out of the travelling party without explanation, a two-hour wait at Luanda airport, and a squad built almost entirely from the domestic league.

Unbeaten in five, with one win, is the shape of Angola’s last year: 1-2 to South Africa at the Cup of Nations, then 1-1 Zimbabwe, 0-0 Egypt, 1-1 Mauritania, 3-0 Central African Republic, 0-0 Egypt. What I take from that is a side that is very hard to beat and very hard to watch score, and Cissé’s first competitive selection confirmed the priority – a back five, two screening midfielders, and a point celebrated as a success. At home against a weaker opponent he will have to open up a little, and Depú and Zini Salvador give him the players to do it. But I have seen nothing yet to suggest an Angola that scores two or three; a 1-0 is the natural result of this team’s current habits, and that is why the goals line is my bet rather than the handicap.

Two wins in the last six, one a friendly against Lesotho and the other against the weakest side in the group, with the manager admitting his team sat back once ahead. Malawi’s 2026 results – 0-0, 0-1, 0-1, 1-1, 2-1 – tell the same story at both ends: they rarely score more than once and they rarely concede more than once. Set-pieces are the route to goal, and Lameck’s long throw against South Sudan is exactly the kind of weapon that can trouble a makeshift Angolan back line. But I do not expect a domestic-based squad, after a long trip and an airport farce, to come to Luanda and open the game up against a side that held Egypt to two shots on target. A tight, low-scoring match in which Malawi try to keep it at nil for as long as possible is the likeliest picture, and that fits the under better than any result bet.

Angola vs Malawi: Prediction & Betting Tip

The way I see this, the one thing both teams have shown consistently in 2026 is that their matches are low-scoring. Angola’s last six games have produced three, two, zero, two, three and zero goals; Malawi’s five this year have produced zero, one, one, two and three. The last three meetings between the sides finished 1-0, 0-0 and 0-0. Cissé has built his Angola on a back five and clean sheets, Pasuwa has admitted his Malawi drop deep once they lead, and both squads are missing attacking options – Luvumbo doubtful and three Angolans sent home, Mphasi and Mpinganjira left out of Malawi’s travelling party. Add a home side whose only convincing attacking display this year came against the Central African Republic, and two goals or fewer is the outcome I rate most.

The strongest argument against is that Angola, at home and needing to win to stay in touch with Malawi and Egypt, could finally find the goals – the Mabululu hat-trick in June shows what happens when this team meets a side it can dominate, and Malawi conceded from a defensive mix-up straight after half-time in Lilongwe. A 2-1 or 3-0 is not far-fetched, and the 2010 Cup of Nations meeting on Angolan soil finished 2-0 to the hosts. I also treat Cissé’s side with caution precisely because it is new: two competitive games is not enough to know how they attack. That caution is why I prefer the goals line to Angola to win, which I list as the alternative, and why the stake stays at four.

My main bet is **Under 2.5 Goals at 1.53 with MyStake**. My correct-score pick is 1-0.
