Frankfurt look for a response after the 6-0 at Leipzig
Eintracht Frankfurt host 1. FC Köln at the Deutsche Bank Park on Friday, 16 October 2026, in the sixth round of the Bundesliga. Frankfurt are 14th with five points and come into the game after a 6-0 defeat at RB Leipzig, in which Adi Hütter took off captain Robin Koch at half-time. Köln are tenth with seven points after beating Gladbach 2-1 in the derby, but they have lost Ellyes Skhiri to a serious ankle injury. Kick-off is at 20:30, with Benjamin Brand the referee.
“Das ist ein sehr, sehr wichtiges Spiel, möglicherweise auch ein richtungsweisendes Spiel.” – Eintracht Frankfurt manager Adi Hütter
Predicted lineups: Frankfurt vs Köln
Frankfurt have no new injury problems. Hütter has confirmed that Koch will start and remain captain, and Nnamdi Collins is expected to line up against Saïd El Mala, the player Hütter singled out: “El Mala ist der Spieler, den wir in den Griff bekommen müssen.” Köln’s injury list is long. Skhiri suffered a syndesmosis tear against Gladbach and is out until early 2027, while Thijs Dallinga (cruciate ligament), Ragnar Ache (muscle), Timo Hübers, Rav van den Berg and Imad Rondić are also missing. Tom Krauß and Ísak Jóhannesson are expected to form the midfield base.
Eintracht Frankfurt Team News & Preview
Frankfurt have five points from five games and the third-worst defence in the Bundesliga, with 16 goals conceded. They have not won at home this season, losing 4-1 to Augsburg and drawing 2-2 with Freiburg, and the trip to Leipzig was a disaster: Leipzig scored in the first minute, Christopher Nkunku completed a first-half hat-trick and Frankfurt were 4-0 down at the break. Hütter switched to a back four at half-time, but they still conceded twice more.
In his pre-match press conference, Hütter said his team were “für viele Gegner zu bequem” and demanded that they “beißen, kratzen und zwicken” from the first minute. Younes Ebnoutalib (four goals) and Jonathan Burkardt (three) give them a threat up front, and every one of their league games so far has produced at least four goals.
What works for or against Frankfurt
- Ebnoutalib and Burkardt have seven league goals between them.
- 16 goals conceded in five league games.
- No home win yet this season.
- Koch keeps the captaincy after being substituted at Leipzig.
1. FC Köln Team News & Preview
Köln are tenth with seven points and won the derby against Gladbach 2-1 on Sunday. Gladbach started better, but Jóhannesson’s volley and El Mala’s second-half winner settled it, with El Mala having eight shots on his own. The win came at a cost, though. Skhiri, who had the best passing numbers on the pitch, went off injured before half-time, and René Wagner called it “ein brutaler Schlag”.
Köln have been involved in open games all season: both teams have scored in all five of their league matches, and they have conceded at least once in every one of them. Away from home they have lost both games, conceding six goals.
What works for or against Köln
- Beat Gladbach 2-1 in the derby on Sunday.
- El Mala is their most dangerous attacker.
- Skhiri out until early 2027, with Dallinga and Ache also injured.
- Lost both away league games, conceding six goals.

Frankfurt vs. Cologne Form Guide
Frankfurt Form, Stats & Data
Frankfurt concede more than three goals per league game and score 1.8. Hütter wants a more aggressive, front-foot approach in his second spell, but so far the balance has not been there, and their matches have been wide open.
Cologne Form, Stats & Data
Köln score 1.6 and concede two goals per league game. They are dangerous in transition through El Mala and Maina, but without Skhiri in front of the defence they lose their main stabiliser.
Frankfurt vs Köln: Prediction & Betting Tip
Every Frankfurt league game this season has produced four or more goals, and their defence has conceded 16 in five matches. Köln have been involved in open games too, with both teams scoring in all five of their league matches, and now they lose Skhiri, the player who protects their back four. Hütter wants his team to be more aggressive from the start, which I think will make this an end-to-end game rather than a cautious one.
My main concern is the reaction to the 6-0. After a defeat like that, Hütter could ask for caution and tighten the back line, and only two of Köln’s five league games have gone over 3.5 goals. Five games is a small sample, so I am keeping the stake moderate. But both defences have been too open for me to expect a tight game.
My selection is Over 3.5 Goals at 1.85 with Winz, with 3-2 as my correct-score call.
