Auswärtskönige in the Saarland: Mainz’s road form meets a leaky Elversberg back line
Pre-match update (19:40 CET): The starting XIs are in and the big question has been answered: Nadiem Amiri starts for Mainz, alongside Phillip Tietz and Sheraldo Becker up front, and Robin Zentner is back in goal. Paul Nebel comes into midfield. Elversberg start Lukas Pinckert and Lasse Günther despite their knocks, with Francis Onyeka in the No. 10 role. Nothing here weakens the case, so my bet stays Mainz 05 over 1.5 team goals at 1.70 with Winz at 3/10. The odds quoted are from 29 October; I could not re-check this market before kick-off, so prices may have moved since.
Mainz cannot win at home – no victories in four attempts – but they have not lost away: Hamburg 0-5, Gladbach 3-4 and Schalke 0-1, all in their favour. That road form takes them to the Kaiserlinde, where Elversberg have beaten Leverkusen and Augsburg but conceded seven goals in three home games. Both sides went out of the DFB-Pokal on Tuesday, both rotated, and both lost 2-0, so neither has a fitness edge.
“Das war ein kollektiver Ausfall.” (“That was a collective failure.”) – Mainz’s Niko Bungert after the 2-0 cup defeat at Bochum
Predicted lineups: Elversberg vs Mainz
The lineups are now confirmed, and the biggest question went Mainz’s way. Nadiem Amiri, who missed the Bochum cup tie with knee trouble, starts for the visitors, and Robin Zentner is back in goal after his hand injury. Urs Fischer has restored his first-choice side after rotating on Tuesday: Danny da Costa, Stefan Posch and Kacper Potulski in the back three, Paul Nebel joining Amiri in midfield, and Phillip Tietz and Sheraldo Becker together up front. Vincent Wagner also goes strong for Elversberg. Lukas Pinckert and Lasse Günther both start despite their knocks, and Francis Onyeka plays behind David Mokwa. Jan Gyamerah, Tom Zimmerschied and Seifert are still missing for the hosts.
Elversberg Team News & Preview
Wagner’s side play brave football, and that cuts both ways. They are the only team in this fixture to have taken points off Leverkusen, but their last league game ended 4-0 at Leipzig, where they produced 0.46 expected goals against 2.18. Their defensive numbers are the worst of the two clubs by some distance: 15 goals conceded in seven games and 2.29 expected goals against per match.
Tuesday’s cup exit was a different kind of defeat. Elversberg had around 70% of the ball against Darmstadt and 18 shots but lost 2-0, with Wagner calling it „nicht cool“. Up front they rely on Maurice Krattenmacher and Lukas Petkov, their best-rated player, and both are likely to start.
What works for or against Elversberg
- Home wins over Leverkusen (3-2) and Augsburg (4-3) show they can hurt good sides.
- Seven goals conceded in three home league games.
- Gyamerah and Zimmerschied out; Pinckert and Günther start despite knocks.
- Both teams played 90 minutes in the cup on Tuesday.
Mainz Team News & Preview
Bungert’s “collective failure” verdict on the Bochum defeat was about a rotated side, and Mainz’s league numbers tell a better story. They average 2.24 expected goals per game, the higher figure in this fixture by a clear margin, and away from home they have turned that into goals: five in Hamburg, four in Mönchengladbach. Phillip Tietz has five league goals and Sheraldo Becker four assists, and wing-back Anthony Caci is their best-rated player after scoring and assisting against Bremen.
The home record is the odd part – three defeats and a draw at the Mewa Arena – but the problem there has been defending, not scoring: they put three past Leverkusen and two past Bremen and still lost both.
What works for or against Mainz
- Three away wins out of three, ten goals scored.
- 2.24 expected goals and 6.3 shots on target per game.
- Captain Amiri starts after missing the cup tie with a knee problem.
- Scored only once in the 1-0 win at Schalke and drew a blank at home to Paderborn.

Elversberg vs. Mainz Form Guide
Elversberg Form, Stats & Data
The 2.29 expected goals against is the number that shapes my bet. It is not one freak result: Elversberg have conceded at least twice in five of seven league games, and at home every opponent has scored twice. Their own attack scores slightly more than its chances suggest, which is why I would not rule out goals at both ends.
Mainz Form, Stats & Data
Mainz’s goals match their chances almost exactly – 16 goals from 15.7 expected – so their scoring is built on volume, not luck. Against the weakest defence they have faced on the road so far, that volume is what I want on my side.
Elversberg vs Mainz: Prediction & Betting Tip
I do not need to pick a winner here. Elversberg are good enough to score against anyone at home, and Mainz’s defending has cost them every home game. What I am confident about is Mainz finding the net more than once: they create the most in this fixture, they have done it twice in three away games, and Elversberg have let in two or more in every home match.
Amiri was the worry, and he starts. Mainz have still been held to one goal or fewer in three of seven league games, and he has only just come through a knee problem, so that risk has not disappeared. With the captain linking midfield and attack and Tietz and Becker both up front, though, Elversberg’s open style makes a blank or a single goal less likely here, and that is why Mainz 05 over 1.5 team goals at 1.70 with Winz is my selection at 3/10. I see this finishing 2-2.
