The league leaders meet the meanest defence in the 2. Bundesliga
Hertha arrive at the Betzenberg unbeaten and top of the table, but they are walking into the toughest place in the division to score. Kaiserslautern have conceded four goals in nine league games, have not let one in at home, and won 1-0 at Nürnberg last week to inflict Nürnberg’s first league defeat of the season. The Fritz-Walter-Stadion is sold out, with around 5,000 travelling fans from Berlin, and Stefan Leitl has called it the standout fixture of the round.
„Es ist eine Mannschaft, die sehr schwer zu bespielen ist.“ („It’s a team that is very hard to play against.“) – Hertha manager Stefan Leitl
Predicted lineups: Kaiserslautern vs Hertha
Both managers changed their sides for the cup on Wednesday, so the league line-ups from last weekend are the best guide. Torsten Lieberknecht’s main worry is Erencan Yardımcı, who scored the winner at Nürnberg but has a bruised Achilles tendon and was called a big question mark. Ivan Prtajin is back after a long injury and headed in at Hannover. Hertha expect to bring back Deyovaisio Zeefuik, Jón Thorsteinsson and Oluwaseun Adewumi, who were rested for the trip to Jeddeloh.
Kaiserslautern Team News & Preview
Lieberknecht’s side win by keeping games small. Their nine league matches have produced 13 goals in total, with three goalless draws and four wins to nil. At home the record is 0-0 against Karlsruhe, 3-0, 1-0 and 2-0. Julian Krahl is the best-rated player in the squad, and on Wednesday he made the key saves in a 2-0 cup win at Hannover, where the hosts were the better side before the break.
The attack is the limit. Kaiserslautern average exactly one goal per league game, and Yardımcı, their top league scorer with three, may not be fully fit. That makes another low-scoring afternoon far more likely than a shootout.
What works for or against Kaiserslautern
- Seven clean sheets in nine league games, four goals conceded.
- Four home league games, no goals conceded.
- Only nine goals scored all season, and top scorer Yardımcı is a doubt.
- They have allowed 1.36 expected goals per game, so Krahl has been doing a lot of work.
Hertha Team News & Preview
Hertha’s start is outstanding: eight wins and a draw from nine league games and 20 goals scored. Josip Brekalo has been their difference-maker with five goals and five assists. Their early-season games were open, including a 5-3 win in Braunschweig, but the recent pattern has changed: 2-1 against Fürth, 0-0 at Kiel and 1-0 against Bielefeld, a game settled by Brekalo’s stoppage-time penalty.
Leitl has openly said his strikers Sebastian Grønning and Schuler have been missing chances, and forward Gustaf Nilsson missed the cup tie with a muscle problem. Centre-back Márton Dárdai was also absent in Jeddeloh.
What works for or against Hertha
- Last three league games: 2-1, 0-0 and 1-0.
- Leitl has criticised his strikers' finishing.
- 2.20 expected goals per game, the best attack in this fixture.
- Scored in eight of nine league games.

Kaiserslautern vs. Hertha Berlin Form Guide
Kaiserslautern Form, Stats & Data
The gap between 1.36 expected goals against and 0.44 actual goals against is huge, and some of it is Krahl. But the other side of the sheet matters just as much: Kaiserslautern score fewer than their chances suggest too. Games involving them simply do not have many goals in them.
Hertha Berlin Form, Stats & Data
Hertha are the most complete side in the division and their goals match their chances. That is the threat to my bet. Their defence, though, is almost as good as Kaiserslautern’s, and they have conceded just once in their last three league games.
Kaiserslautern vs Hertha: Prediction & Betting Tip
Hertha are the one team in this league with the attack to break Kaiserslautern open. They create more than two expected goals per game, and if they score early the home side will have to come out, which would change the shape of the match completely. Kaiserslautern’s defensive record also leans on Krahl more than the underlying numbers would like.
I still see a tense, cagey game. Both sides have tightened up recently, Kaiserslautern have kept a clean sheet in every home league game, and Hertha’s last two league fixtures produced one goal between them. Under 2.5 Goals at 2.20 with Winz is my main bet at 3/10, and I expect a 1-0.
