The Clausura leaders visit a team with its mind on Montevideo
Pre-match update (00:32 CET): The official line-ups had not been released when I checked. Local reports from La Plata still treat Tomás Palacios as a doubt after he missed training with a knee knock, with Marcos Rojo the likely replacement, and there is no sign of Estudiantes resting players ahead of the Supercopa or the Libertadores final. Instituto report no new absences and are expected to name their usual side. Nothing has changed my view, so my bet and stake stay as they are: Instituto +0.25 at 1.90 with Winz, 3/10. The odds quoted are from 30 October; prices may have moved since.
Estudiantes are living two very different seasons. In the Copa Libertadores they knocked out Flamengo on penalties at the Maracanã and, after CONMEBOL rejected Flamengo’s protest this week, are confirmed for the final against Palmeiras in Montevideo on 28 November. In the Clausura they are 11th in Zona A with four wins from 14 games and no longer control their play-off fate. Instituto, meanwhile, are the form team of the tournament: top of Zona A with 32 points, ten wins, and unbeaten in six league games.
„No nos vamos a guardar nada, vamos a ir a fondo con todo.“ („We won’t hold anything back, we’ll go all out.“) – Instituto coach Diego Flores ahead of the trip to La Plata
Predicted lineups: Estudiantes vs Instituto
Estudiantes centre-back Tomás Palacios, their best-rated player in the Clausura, took a knock to the knee at Unión and missed training as a precaution; Marcos Rojo is ready to step in. Joaquín Correa and Jalil Elías are injured and Gabriel Neves is a long-term absentee. Instituto have no new problems. Three of their key players are one booking from a suspension, but Flores expects to field all of them and has promised not to hold anything back.
Estudiantes Team News & Preview
The Libertadores run has come at a price in the league. Since the first leg against Flamengo, Estudiantes have lost 2-1 at home to San Lorenzo and 3-1 at Unión, and they drew 2-2 at Central Córdoba before that. With 14 points from 14 games and two rounds left, they need others to slip as well as winning themselves.
They are not short of the ball. Alexander Medina’s side average almost 60% possession and plenty of shots on target, but their expected goals of 21.6 are almost matched by the 21.1 they concede, which explains why their results have been so mixed. With a Supercopa game on 12 November and the biggest match in years at the end of the month, it would be no surprise if the intensity is not quite where it was in Rio.
What works for or against Estudiantes
- Two defeats in the last three league games.
- Libertadores final against Palmeiras on 28 November.
- Tomás Palacios a doubt, Correa and Elías injured.
- Almost 60% average possession.
Instituto Team News & Preview
Instituto’s numbers stand out. Ten wins from 14, 21 goals scored and only ten conceded, with an expected-goals-against figure of 10.3 that shows the defence is genuinely hard to break down rather than lucky. Fernando Alarcón, a centre-back with three goals, is their best-rated player, and Giuliano Cerato leads the scoring with four.
They have also been winning away from home: 4-1 at Independiente and 1-0 at Defensa y Justicia in their last two road trips. Last weekend’s 1-0 win over Riestra kept them top, and with international football for next year already secured, Flores has made clear they still want to finish first.
What works for or against Instituto
- Top of Zona A and unbeaten in six.
- Ten goals conceded in 14 games.
- Won their last two away games 4-1 and 1-0.
- Three key players one booking from a ban.

Estudiantes vs. Instituto Form Guide
Estudiantes Form, Stats & Data
Plenty of control, not much separation. Estudiantes create chances, but they give almost as many away, and their best-rated player is the one whose fitness is in doubt.
Instituto Form, Stats & Data
An xG against of 10.3 in 14 games is outstanding. Instituto do not need the ball to control games, and that suits a trip to a side that likes to dominate possession.
Estudiantes vs Instituto: Prediction & Betting Tip
Estudiantes are the bigger club with the more decorated squad, and on paper they still have something to play for. A team that has just reached a Libertadores final has plenty of confidence, and Muslera, Rojo and company have been through far tougher games than this. If Medina picks his strongest side, they are capable of beating anyone in Argentina.
But the league form says otherwise, and I trust Instituto’s consistency more. They have conceded only ten goals in 14 games, they have been winning on the road, and their coach has promised no let-up. With +0.25, an Instituto win pays out in full, a draw pays half the stake at these odds and refunds the other half, and only an Estudiantes win loses. Instituto +0.25 (Asian Handicap) at 1.90 with Winz is my bet at 3/10. I expect a 1-1.
