The Clausura’s tightest defence meets its bluntest attack
Pre-match update (22:20 CET): Nothing has changed the picture. Rubén Darío Insúa confirmed his San Lorenzo XI at his press conference: one change from the Newell’s game, Nahuel Arias in for Gonzalo Alassia, with Alexis Cuello still starting despite his row with the manager after being substituted last week, and Facundo Farías in the side. Vélez are still without the suspended Rodrigo Aliendro. The clubs had not yet released their official teamsheets at the time of writing. My bet stays Under 2.5 Goals at 1.56 with Winz (3/10); those odds are from 30 October and may have moved since.
Vélez Sarsfield have already booked their place in the play-offs, sitting second in Zona A on 27 points with only one defeat in 14 games, and they are still in the race to finish top of the annual table. San Lorenzo are ninth, one point behind Independiente in the last play-off place, and need to win to keep their hopes alive before Independiente play on Monday. The problem for Rubén Darío Insúa’s side is obvious: they have scored seven goals in 14 Clausura games, half a goal per match.
„Estoy enfocado en este momento del torneo, esperar a ver qué pasa con la tabla anual.“ („I’m focused on this stage of the tournament, waiting to see what happens with the annual table.“) – Vélez coach Guillermo Barros Schelotto, asked about links with the Racing job
Predicted lineups: Vélez vs San Lorenzo
Vélez lose Rodrigo Aliendro, who was sent off late in the 5-0 win at Central Córdoba after a VAR review. Claudio Baeza is the likely replacement alongside Lucas Robertone, with youngster Luca Feler an outside option. Emanuel Mammana is still injured. San Lorenzo’s Facundo Farías, their best-rated player, is carrying a knock and has trained less this week, but Insúa has named him in his XI. Insúa confirmed one change from the Newell’s game: Nahuel Arias comes in for Gonzalo Alassia, and Alexis Cuello keeps his place up front.
Vélez Team News & Preview
Vélez’s season has been built on defence. They have conceded 13 goals in 14 games, 0.9 per game, and their home record in recent weeks includes 1-0 wins over Estudiantes and Gimnasia Mendoza. The attack has been more uneven: a 3-2 win over Tigre and a 2-2 draw with Platense at the Amalfitani, but also 1-1 draws away at Riestra and Newell’s.
Last weekend’s 5-0 win at Central Córdoba, with a hat-trick from Ronaldo Martínez, inflates the picture. Martínez has ten league goals and is the one player in this game who can turn it into a high-scoring night. Manuel Lanzini, Vélez’s best-rated player, is the main creator. Losing Aliendro takes some balance out of the midfield, but Baeza is a defensive option rather than an attacking one.
What works for or against Vélez
- 13 goals conceded in 14 Clausura games.
- Already through to the play-offs.
- Aliendro suspended after a late red card.
- Ronaldo Martínez has ten league goals.
San Lorenzo Team News & Preview
San Lorenzo’s numbers are remarkable at both ends. They have conceded only 12 goals, but scored just seven, an average of half a goal a game. Their expected-goals figure of 11.9 confirms this is not bad luck. Rodrigo Auzmendi is their top league scorer with two.
Their recent results follow the same pattern: 0-0 at home to Newell’s, a 2-1 win at Estudiantes thanks to a late goal, 1-0 at home to Riestra, 1-1 at Independiente and 0-0 at Estudiantes de Río Cuarto. Only two of their last nine league games, the 3-0 defeat at Defensa y Justicia and the win in La Plata, produced three goals or more. Insúa’s 3-4-1-2 is set up to stay compact first.
What works for or against San Lorenzo
- Only 12 goals conceded in 14 games.
- Seven goals scored in 14 Clausura games.
- Must win to keep their play-off hopes alive.
- Farías carrying a knock.

Sarsfield vs. San Lorenzo Form Guide
Sarsfield Form, Stats & Data
Vélez have scored above their expected goals, largely thanks to Martínez’s finishing, and the 5-0 last week accounts for a big share of that. Strip it out and they look like a solid side that wins games by a goal.
San Lorenzo Form, Stats & Data
Nineteen goals in 14 San Lorenzo games, both ends combined. That is the core of this bet: whatever the result, their matches rarely open up.
Vélez vs San Lorenzo: Prediction & Betting Tip
The danger is San Lorenzo’s situation. They need a win, and if Vélez score first, Insúa will have to throw bodies forward, which could hand Ronaldo Martínez the space he enjoyed in Santiago del Estero last weekend. Vélez’s own games have been livelier than San Lorenzo’s, with 36 goals in their 14 matches.
Even so, I expect a low-scoring game. San Lorenzo create very little, Vélez concede very little, and Aliendro’s suspension is more likely to make the hosts cautious than expansive. Under 2.5 Goals at 1.56 with Winz is my bet at 3/10. I expect a 1-0 to Vélez.
