Luzern lose their anchor just as Sion’s attack is purring
Pre-match update (19:45 CET): The official line-ups had not been released when I checked, so the XIs below are still my predicted sides. Luzern have also left vice-captain Stefan Knezevic out of the squad, which does not change their back line as I expected it. Sion are without defender Lorenzo Villa, who suffered a fractured skull in training, and Baltazar, but neither featured in my expected XI, and Kreshnik Hajrizi is back in contention. Nothing here weakens the case, so my bet stays Sion +0.25 (Asian Handicap) at 1.60 with Winz at 2/10. The odds quoted are from 30 October; prices may have moved since.
Luzern’s young side have hit a rough patch: a 4-0 hammering at Lugano and a 2-1 defeat at FC Zürich in their last two league games, and three defeats in four. Now they lose Leonardo Bertone, the experienced number six who had started ten of their 11 league games, to a torn adductor muscle fibre. Sion arrive third in the table, with four wins from their last six league games and the most dangerous attack in this fixture.
„Es ist wichtig, dass sie nicht zu viel überlegen.“ („It’s important that they don’t overthink.“) – Luzern coach Jörg Portmann on his young players
Predicted lineups: Luzern vs Sion
Bertone’s absence leaves Mio Zimmermann and Tyron Owusu to hold the middle for Portmann, who was promoted from the club’s U17s in the summer. Matteo Di Giusto remains Luzern’s key creator. Didier Tholot is expected to keep the Sion side that beat Lausanne 1-0 last weekend, with Ilyas Chouaref, their best-rated player, and Winsley Boteli, the top scorer, leading the attack.
Luzern Team News & Preview
Luzern can score, as their 5-1 win over Grasshopper showed, and they create 2.08 expected goals per game. The trouble is they concede exactly as much: 24 goals in 11 games is one of the worst records in the league. At home they have won three of five but also lost 3-1 and 4-2.
Portmann talked openly about his young players putting themselves under pressure. Losing a calm, experienced head like Bertone in front of the back four is the worst possible timing.
What works for or against Luzern
- Three defeats in the last four league games.
- Bertone is out for around four weeks.
- 24 goals conceded in 11 league games.
- Three wins from five home games.
Sion Team News & Preview
Sion have scored 24 league goals and average 2.30 expected goals per game. On their travels they have won 2-1, 3-0 and 5-2, and lost only twice. Boteli has six league goals, although only one in his last six games, and Chouaref has been the standout performer.
The heavy 3-0 defeat at Servette earlier this month is a reminder that they can be undone, but they responded with a cup win and a 1-0 over Lausanne.
What works for or against Sion
- Four wins from the last six league games.
- Three away wins out of five.
- 2.30 expected goals per game.
- Beaten 3-0 at Servette this month.

FC Luzern vs. FC Sion Form Guide
FC Luzern Form, Stats & Data
Luzern’s chances created and conceded are identical, but they have scored fewer and conceded more than those chances suggest. That is a team low on confidence, and it is now without its most experienced midfielder.
FC Sion Form, Stats & Data
Sion are better at both ends: more chances created, fewer conceded, and more of the ball. Those are the numbers I want behind an away side with a quarter-goal head start.
Luzern vs Sion: Prediction & Betting Tip
This is not a one-sided fixture. Luzern have won three of five at home, they score freely when things click, and the 5-1 against Grasshopper showed how dangerous they can be. In a game with this many expected goals, one deflection or set piece can settle it either way.
I still think Sion are the better side, especially with Bertone missing for Luzern. The +0.25 line gives me a safety net: a Sion win pays in full, while a draw pays half the stake at these odds and refunds the other half. Sion +0.25 (Asian Handicap) at 1.60 with Winz is my selection at 2/10. I expect a 2-2 or a narrow Sion win.
