No home win against no away win: Bochum and Karlsruhe meet in a battle of blunt and patchy sides
Bochum have not won a league game at the Ruhrstadion this season, and Karlsruhe have not won away from home. Something has to give, but Uwe Rösler is not getting carried away: he calls it a 50/50 game. His side come in on two straight wins, 2-0 against Mainz in the cup and a late 2-1 at Cottbus, while Karlsruhe’s form has swung wildly, from a 6-1 hammering at Magdeburg to a deserved 2-1 home win over Heidenheim.
„Karlsruhe can cause any team problems; they’re one of the most intense sides in the league.“ – Uwe Rösler (via Bochum-Journal, translated from German)
Predicted lineups: Bochum vs Karlsruhe
Rösler says he has not decided on his line-up yet. Cokaj, Mbom and Olsen are back in training but not yet options, and Drakas and Strompf are not ready. Philipp Hofmann, who faces his former club, is expected to lead the line again. Karlsruhe are without Franke and Jung, and Marvin Wanitzek, their highest-rated player and set-piece taker, should play behind Shio Fukuda.
VfL Bochum Team News & Preview
Bochum are 13th with 11 points, and their problem is obvious: eight league goals in ten games, the fewest in the division. At home they have drawn two and lost three, scoring twice and conceding five. Their defence is solid by second-tier standards, with 11 goals against, and their games are rarely open: 19 goals in ten league matches in total.
The win at Cottbus showed both sides of them. They were behind at half-time, Hofmann had two goals ruled out for offside, and it took a Hofmann goal and a late winner from substitute Christian Rasmussen to turn it around. Hofmann has three league goals and Maximilian Wittek has been their best player on the FotMob ratings.
What works for or against Bochum
- Two straight wins, in the cup and the league.
- Only 11 league goals conceded.
- No home league win this season (2:5).
- Eight league goals, the fewest in the division.
Karlsruher SC Team News & Preview
Karlsruhe are 16th with 11 points, and they are much harder to predict. They have scored 13 and conceded 21 in ten games, and their away record – two draws, two defeats, 3:10 – is skewed by the 6-1 at Magdeburg. Maximilian Senft said after the Heidenheim win that his side came out of it stronger, tactically and mentally.
They create 1.26 expected goals per game and allow 1.73. Wanitzek and Fukuda have three league goals each, and Wanitzek’s set pieces are their main weapon, as his free kick against Heidenheim showed.
What works for or against Karlsruhe
- Beat Heidenheim 2-1 last weekend.
- Wanitzek is a constant set-piece threat.
- No away league win this season (3:10).
- 21 goals conceded, including six at Magdeburg.

Bochum vs. Karlsruhe Form Guide
Bochum Form, Stats & Data
Bochum underperform their expected goals in attack, eight from more than 13, but even their expected figures point to a side that does not produce many chances. Their games have been tight all season, and nothing about their recent form suggests a change.
Karlsruhe Form, Stats & Data
Karlsruhe’s goals-against figure is the biggest risk to this bet, but much of it comes from one bad afternoon in Magdeburg. Going forward, they create only around 1.3 expected goals per game, which is not the profile of a side that scores freely away from home.
Bochum vs Karlsruhe: Prediction & Betting Tip
I do not want to pick a winner here, but I do have a view on the goals. Bochum score fewer than anyone in the division, their home games have produced seven goals in five matches and their league games average under two goals. Karlsruhe create only modest chances, and their poor away record is skewed by one heavy defeat.
The strongest argument against is Karlsruhe’s defence. They concede more than two goals per game, and a side that lost 6-1 a fortnight ago can collapse again. Bochum also come in on two wins, which may bring more confidence in attack. Because of that, I am keeping the stake low. Under 2.5 Goals at 2.28 with Winz is my bet at 2/10, and I expect a 1-0 home win.
