Gyamfi banned, Krahl overworked: has Kaiserslautern’s defensive luck run out?
Kaiserslautern sit fourth on the strength of the meanest defence in the 2. Bundesliga, but the numbers underneath that record have looked shaky for weeks. Last Saturday Hertha exposed them 3-0 at the Fritz-Walter-Stadion, and now Torsten Lieberknecht has to reorganise his back line without Maxwell Gyamfi, who is suspended after his fifth booking – against the club he left for the Betzenberg.
„It will be a tough nut to crack for us.“ – Timo Schultz on Kaiserslautern (via vfl.de, translated from German)
Predicted lineups: Osnabrück vs Lautern
Osnabrück have no injury worries at all, so Schultz can pick the 3-4-2-1 that has served him well, with Robin Meißner and Leonhard Münst behind Daniel-Kofi Kyereh. Lautern have more questions. Semih Şahin and Ibrahim Kanaté missed the Hertha game through illness but were named as options again at Lieberknecht’s press conference, while Jacob Rasmussen’s involvement after a long layoff depended on Friday’s final session. Gyamfi’s place in the back three is likely to go to Leon Robinson, with Elvedi and Murphy either side.
Osnabrück Team News & Preview
For a promoted side with 42 per cent of the ball on average, Osnabrück generate a surprising amount: 17.7 expected goals in ten games, more than Kaiserslautern, Bielefeld or Magdeburg. Schultz’s side defend in a deep 5-3-2 shape and attack quickly, and Meißner, their top scorer with four goals, has been the key outlet. They come into the weekend off a 2-0 defeat at Wolfsburg, where they were outshot 21-8, but before that they had beaten Fürth 3-0 at the Bremer Brücke.
Home form is mixed – wins over Braunschweig and Fürth, a draw with Dresden, defeats to Magdeburg and leaders Hertha – and the ground is sold out. Schultz has the luxury of a full squad, which is rare at this stage of the season.
What works for or against Osnabrück
- Full squad available, with no injuries or suspensions.
- 17.7 expected goals in ten games, a strong number for a promoted side.
- Six goals conceded after mistakes in their own build-up, the most in the league.
- Lost to Magdeburg and Hertha at home.
Kaiserslautern Team News & Preview
Gyamfi’s suspension removes more than a defender. He had started every league game and has the best passing accuracy in a team that otherwise completes only around 78 per cent of its passes, the lowest figure in the league. Lautern’s game is built on running – they lead the division for sprints – and on Julian Krahl, whose 88 per cent save rate has kept a lot of chances out.
That record looked less solid against Hertha. Lautern had more shots in the first half but conceded twice to Grønning and once to Adewumi, and the xG finished 3.52 to 1.29. Their away form has been good, with wins at St. Pauli and Nürnberg and draws at Wolfsburg and Heidenheim, but the attack remains thin: nine league goals in ten games, and no player with more than three.
What works for or against Kaiserslautern
- Only one away defeat this season and wins at St. Pauli and Nürnberg.
- Krahl has kept the league's best save rate.
- Gyamfi is suspended and Hertha created 3.52 xG against them last time out.
- Nine goals in ten games.

Osnabruck vs. Kaiserslautern Form Guide
Osnabruck Form, Stats & Data
Osnabrück’s 1.77 expected goals per game sits well above their actual 1.40, which tells me their attack is better than the table suggests. The defensive side is less convincing, with 1.79 xG against and too many errors in possession, so I do not expect a clean sheet. What I do expect is chances, and against a Lautern back line without its organiser, that matters more.
Kaiserslautern Form, Stats & Data
Seven goals conceded from 15.7 expected against is the biggest gap in the division, and the best player on FotMob’s ratings is the goalkeeper. That combination rarely lasts. At the other end, nine goals from 14.6 expected shows finishing has been a problem all season. Lautern are a hard-working side, but their place in the top four leans heavily on Krahl.
Osnabrück vs Lautern: Prediction & Betting Tip
The table says Lautern, but the underlying numbers point the other way. Osnabrück create more, have a full squad and play at home in front of a sell-out, while the visitors are without their best ball-playing defender and have been riding their goalkeeper. Hertha showed last week what happens when Lautern’s defence is genuinely tested.
Their away record is the part I respect most: one defeat in five, and only four goals conceded on the road. Head-to-head history also favours Lautern. That is why I want the stake back if it finishes level. VfL Osnabrück Draw No Bet at 1.86 with Winz is my bet at 3/10, and I am going for a 2-1 home win.
