A first Superclásico for Ponzio at the Bombonera
Pre-match update (18:10 CET): Arruabarrena has named exactly the Boca XI we expected, with Leonel Flores and Sebastián Villa on the flanks and Alan Velasco on the bench. River are without Aníbal Moreno, who was left out of the squad after missing training, so 19-year-old Lucas Silva comes into midfield alongside Tobías Andrada and Tomás Galván; Marcos Acuña and Lucas Martínez Quarta both return. Both XIs were confirmed by the two coaches at their team talks, as reported in Argentina, not yet from the official team sheets. Rain and a storm warning are forecast for Buenos Aires around kick-off. Nothing here changes my view: Under 2.5 Goals stays my main bet at 2/10, with Both Teams to Score – No at 1/10. I could not re-check the Winz prices before kick-off, so the odds quoted are from 31 October and may have moved since.
Boca are already through to the Clausura play-offs and top of the annual table, according to Argentine reports, and a win would take them very close to a Copa Libertadores place for 2027. River, with interim manager Leonardo Ponzio in charge since Eduardo Coudet’s departure in August, are provisionally in a play-off spot in Zona B but not yet safe. Both sides won 1-0 last weekend: Boca at Independiente with an 88th-minute header from Facundo Herrera, River at home to Racing.

Predicted lineups: Boca Juniors vs River Plate
Both XIs have now been confirmed by the two coaches, according to Argentine reports. Boca line up exactly as expected: Lautaro Blanco, rested at Independiente, returns at left-back, and Arruabarrena has gone with Leonel Flores and Sebastián Villa either side of Miguel Merentiel, leaving Alan Velasco on the bench. Tomás Aranda is still out. River get Marcos Acuña back at left-back and Lucas Martínez Quarta returns from suspension. Aníbal Moreno, who lasted only 17 minutes against Racing, did not train normally and is out of the squad, so 19-year-old Lucas Silva starts in midfield. Fausto Vera is out with a hamstring tear.
Boca Juniors Team News & Preview
Rodolfo Arruabarrena’s side have been strong at the Bombonera in the Clausura: five wins and a draw from six games, scoring 11 and conceding three. They have conceded 14 goals in 14 Clausura games overall. Leandro Paredes is their highest-rated player and controls the tempo, and Miguel Merentiel leads the scoring with five goals.
The win at Independiente was typical of a tight game: Independiente had clear chances after the break and goalkeeper Álvaro Montero kept the clean sheet before Herrera’s late header from a corner.
What works for or against Boca Juniors
- Three goals conceded in six Clausura home games.
- Won 1-0 at Independiente last weekend.
- Scored 11 goals in six home games.
- Already qualified for the play-offs.
River Plate Team News & Preview
River have conceded 13 goals in 14 Clausura games and kept clean sheets in their last two home games, against Estudiantes and Racing. Away from home they have won three, drawn one and lost two, and their last trip ended 3-0 at Belgrano. Thiago Almada is their highest-rated player, and Tomás Galván has four league goals.
River cancelled their pre-match press conference amid a dispute with the league over the tournament reform, so there are no fresh quotes from Ponzio. With Vera and Moreno both out, 19-year-old Lucas Silva, who has nine first-team league games behind him, starts in front of Otamendi and Martínez Quarta, so River’s midfield may be less settled than usual.
What works for or against River Plate
- 13 goals conceded in 14 Clausura games.
- Clean sheets against Estudiantes and Racing at home.
- Won 3-0 at Belgrano on their last away trip.
- Vera and Moreno out; Lucas Silva (19) starts.

Boca Juniors vs. River Plate Form Guide
Boca Juniors Form, Stats & Data
Third in Zona A of the Clausura. Boca keep the ball and limit chances at home, and their games at the Bombonera have rarely been wide open.
River Plate Form, Stats & Data
Fourth in Zona B. River concede less than a goal per game in the Clausura, and their last two home league wins both came by 1-0.
Boca Juniors vs River Plate: Prediction & Betting Tip
Superclásicos tend to be tense rather than open, and the recent ones fit that pattern: 0-1, 2-0, 2-1 and 0-1, three of them with fewer than three goals. Both defences concede around a goal a game, both teams won 1-0 last weekend, and River still need points to secure a play-off place.
The strongest argument against is the attacking talent on show and the Bombonera crowd: Boca have scored 11 in six home games, River won 3-0 at Belgrano, and one early goal can change the whole game. It is a derby, so I keep it to a small bet at 2/10: Under 2.5 Goals at 1.57 with Winz. My prediction is a 1-0 home win.
