Domestic leaders Porto meet a PSV side short of strikers
PSV are FC Porto’s visitors at the Estádio do Dragão on Tuesday, 20 October 2026, in matchday three of the Champions League league phase. Kick-off is at 21:00 CEST and Daniel Siebert is the referee. Both sides need points: Francesco Farioli’s Porto lost to Manchester City and Real Betis and have none yet, while Peter Bosz’s PSV have one from a home draw with Shakhtar. Their domestic form could hardly be more different, though. Porto have won all eight league games, PSV have lost two in a row.

Predicted lineups: Porto vs PSV
Porto welcome back Jan Bednarek after a two-match European ban carried over from last season, and Samu could make his first start since a long layoff. William Gomes is out and Farioli has kept his left-back choice to himself. PSV are without strikers Ricardo Pepi and Sam Lammers, as well as Jerdy Schouten, Paul Wanner, Alassane Pléa and Adamo Nagalo, and Ruben van Bommel did not travel because he is short of fitness. Guus Til travelled after a heavy fall against ADO but remains a doubt; if he does not start, Sven Mijnans or 17-year-old Mikkel Bro Hansen is expected to lead the line.
Porto Team News & Preview
Porto’s European defeats came with mitigating circumstances. Erling Haaland scored early in the second half and in stoppage time to win the opener for Manchester City at the Dragão, and in Seville Porto led 2-1 through Gabriel Veiga and Samu before a Francisco Moura foul gave away the penalty that started Betis‘ comeback. Farioli felt his side deserved more from both games, but he also admitted they have conceded more than usual.
At home and in the league they look like a different team. Eight wins from eight, including 3-1 against Benfica, have put them five points clear, and the league break has given them a full week of preparation, with a 3-0 friendly win over Feirense on 15 October to keep the rhythm going. Bednarek’s return gives Farioli his first-choice centre-back pairing back.
What works for or against Porto
- Eight wins from eight Liga Portugal games, including 3-1 against Benfica.
- Six days of rest and Jan Bednarek back from suspension.
- No points from two Champions League games and five goals conceded.
- Farioli has not named his left-back after Moura's costly penalty at Betis.
PSV Team News & Preview
PSV arrive in a difficult spell. They lost 2-1 at ADO Den Haag on Friday to an injury-time winner, their third straight away defeat, and they are four points behind Feyenoord, who visit Eindhoven on Sunday. In Europe they were held 1-1 at home by Shakhtar and lost 1-0 at Leipzig, where Bosz said they lost control once they could no longer sustain their press.
The forward line is the main concern. With Pepi and Lammers out, PSV used a 17-year-old, nominally their sixth-choice striker, up front for more than half of the ADO game, and Til’s fitness is uncertain. Bosz has refused to feel sorry for his side and asked them to play with their chests out, but PSV have scored once in two Champions League games.
What works for or against PSV
- Pepi, Lammers and Van Bommel are all missing.
- Three away defeats in a row in all competitions.
- One goal in two Champions League games.
- Ivan Perišić is expected to be fit to start.

Porto vs. PSV Form Guide
Porto Form, Stats & Data
The Champions League numbers make grim reading, but they come from two games against Manchester City and an in-form Betis side, which is a tiny and tough sample. Porto averaged under 40% of the ball across them. I give far more weight to the domestic picture, where eight straight wins and a 3-1 over Benfica show a team that is used to controlling games, and the Dragão against a weakened PSV is much closer to that setting.
PSV Form, Stats & Data
PSV keep the ball and press, but 0.95 xG per game in Europe is a thin return, and the injuries in attack make it hard to see that improving tonight. Their defensive numbers are respectable, which is the main reason this is not a bigger stake: Leipzig needed only one goal, and Bosz’s side kept Shakhtar to one as well.
Porto vs PSV: Prediction & Betting Tip
I like Porto to win at 1.56. They have won every domestic game, they have had six days to prepare against an opponent who played on Friday and has Feyenoord on Sunday, and PSV are missing their two senior strikers. Bosz’s side have lost three away games in a row and scored once in two Champions League matches, so I struggle to see where their goals come from.
The obvious danger is Porto’s own European form: no points, five goals conceded and under 40% possession on average. PSV’s defence has also held up reasonably well in this competition. But those Porto defeats came against much stronger opposition, and with a settled side and a full week’s rest I expect them to make the difference. My main bet is Porto to win at 1.56 with Winz. My correct-score pick is 2-0.
